How To Keep Your Blinds in Good Repair

When in the house during a chilly and damp Oregon winter, it's always nice to accomplish household maintenance tasks to keep you away from too much television or phone surfing. One project that is particularly easy to put off is window blind maintenance. Because window blinds have so many slats, cleaning them can be tedious. Our team at The Decorated Wall has assembled some easy tips to follow so that cleaning your blinds is not such a nuisance. These suggestions will ensure that your blinds look as good as new and appear as if you had them professionally cleaned.

Tips for Cleaning Blinds

Window blinds can quickly become dusty, soiled, or yellowed. Here are some general tips on how to clean them so they look as good as when you initially purchased them.

Dusty Blinds

It's best not to clean dusty blinds with soap and water as that can become messy and leave streaks on the slats. It's better to use a soft cloth, duster, or vacuum. You will want to leave your blinds lowered with the slats to easily reach each slat before running a soft cloth, duster, or soft brush across each slat.

Soiled Blinds

Cleaning soiled blinds is more complicated. Use a half-and-half combination of warm water and white vinegar with just a bit of dish soap for best results. With a sponge, wipe down each slat. With clean water, wipe them down again. If you have wood blinds, refrain from using water or furniture polish.

Yellowed Blinds

There is nothing worse than white blinds that have yellowed. But you can quickly remedy this. Take 2 or 3 cups of bleach and pour it into your filled bathtub. Remove the blinds from the windows and submerge them in the solution. Allow them to soak for about 10 minutes. This process is only appropriate for metal and plastic blinds that are white.

When Your Blinds Are Beyond Cleaning and Repair

Window blinds typically last between 5 and 10 years, sometimes less in busy households and longer in more sedate ones. Here are some signs to look for when you know it's time to invest in new ones.

  • Like any other design décor, window blinds can quickly date themselves. Advanced mechanical and textile technologies have made window blinds come a long way, so keeping up with the latest trends might be wise.
  • Broken slats are another reason to replace your old blinds with new ones. While you can always replace the broken slats, you might need a better match for your room's decor.
  • The operating mechanism is failing. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to manage your light and privacy.
